These paintings (still working on photos of paintings) and prints are my attempt to weave together a number of ideas I’ve been working with. Because I have been using digital images as a starting point for paintings—and because they typically have a sort of implied narrative, the paintings are sort of an extension of the digital beginnings. I shoot a lot of photos and at times grab old found family photos and images from the web—etc. and work from various interpretations of these. A year or so ago I began going out into the forest behind my house to shoot photos--both during the daylight and at night. In the case of the night shots I liked the fact that I couldn’t really see what I was doing and that I was often getting these pitch black images. I found that if I ran the images through some programs and reversed—or inverted them and cranked the lightness up—I was coming up with these very intriguing and ghostly images. For me it was sort of a revelation...a sort of exposure of an otherwise invisible world.
Some time later I began taking wallpaper samples images and superimposing them and manipulating them profusely then erasing all but a trace.
I'm kind of jaded about too much explanation. I want to make pictures that are engaging and enjoyable—but a little dark and edgy—and in a weird way at times at least, almost kitschy.
